Watershed Wednesday: Winter Recreation and Leave No Trace

Let’s get outside this #WatershedWednesday! We live in a beautiful place full of year-round outdoor opportunities. Grab your jacket and gloves—just because it is wintertime doesn’t mean there aren’t tons of adventures to be had.

Snowshoeing, skiing, ice climbing, hiking, ice skating or taking the dog out for a walk on a trail can all be done in our backyard. Explore places like Hyalite Reservoir or First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park!

Recreate responsibly! While enjoying our outdoor spaces, follow the 7 “Leave No Trace” principles for recreation:

  1. Plan Ahead & Prepare - Assess weather, skill level, and safety!

  2. Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces - Stay on the trail where one is designated.

  3. Dispose of Waste Properly - “Pack it in, Pack it out!”

  4. Leave What You Find - Allow others to have a sense of discovery!

  5. Minimize Campfire Impacts - Use existing fire rings or minimize impact by using fire pans.

  6. Respect Wildlife - Observe from animals from a distance! Remember, they are wild no matter how cute they are.

  7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors - Wear earphones instead of using a speaker— not everyone will appreciate your great taste in music! Also, downhill hikers yield to uphill foot travelers.

Time spent outside is always time well spent! Enjoy all that the Lower Gallatin Watershed has to offer.
